Ford has cut the price of most of its Ranger utes - some by as much as $4500.

Price changes on Ranger four-wheel-drive utes vary from $1000 for the 3.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder diesel XL crew-cab cab-chassis model up to $3000 for the turbocharged, four-cylinder diesel XL and XLT Super Cab pick-up models.

Savings on rear-drive Ranger utes range from $2000 for the 2.5-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder diesel XL single-cab pick-up to $4500 for the 3.0-litre turbo diesel XL Super Cab pick-up.

The price of the base 2.5-litre diesel XL cab-chassis is the same - from $20,990, although it gains air-conditioning as a no-cost option.

The Ranger is one of the newest utes on the market. It was released in February and Ford took the unusual step of equipping the range with diesel engines only. The Mazda BT-50 utility - which shares the underpinnings of the Ranger - is also diesel-only.

According to figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, the Ranger is seventh in the sales race in both the rear-drive and 4WD ute markets.

In the six months the Ranger has been on sale Ford has sold 5489 Rangers (4WD and rear-drive). Toyota sold 21,294 of the top-selling HiLux in the same period.

The Ranger is the only imported utility with side airbags. They are a no-cost option on the flagship 4WD XLT models and form part of a $1200 safety package (which includes anti-lock brakes, power windows, upgraded trim and central locking) on three rear-drive models and five other 4WD models.

Driver and passenger front airbags are standard across the range.
