AS 1892.5-2000 Portable Ladders Part 5: Selection, Safe Use and Care sets out the minimum recommended safe practices and requirements for theselection, use and maintenance of portable ladders. The requirements of this Standard need not apply where recognized safe work procedures are in place.
PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand Committee SF/34, Portable Ladders, as a revision of AS 1892.4(Int)—1992, Portable ladders, Part 4: Selection, safe use and care and NZS 3609:1978, Specification for timber ladders, in part.

SECTION 1 SCOPE AND GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE This Standard sets out the minimum recommended safe practices and requirements for the selection, use and maintenance of portable ladders. The requirements of this Standard need not apply where recognized safe work procedures are in place.
1.2 OBJECTIVE The objective of this Standard is to provide users of portable ladders with means of minimizing the risks to the health and safety of users and others working with or otherwise near portable ladders.
1.3 APPLICATION The general principles recommended for the selection, use and maintenance of portable ladders are given in Section 2. Specific requirements unique to a ladder predominantly constructed from a particular material are given in a Section appropriate to the material, as follows:
