This special sling is designed to be made very short, and provide a single lifting
point under Ramshorn Hooks on large cranes. This enables a single point load
to be attached and still maintain centreline loading on the cranes lower hoist-
ing block assembly (unbalanced loads can cause these hooks to skew off the rig
centreline, potentially damaging the block assembly and wire rope).
This sling is basically a Double Ended Superflex Strop, middled as in a cradle lift.
Each eye of the middled strop is then attached to one hook of the ramshorn (see
drawing). In the bight (middle) is a fitted heavy duty open type cast steel thimble to
provide a good radius and minimise wear and tear on the cables. It is retained in
the assembly with two Keeper Plates. These thimbles will accommodate the indus-
trial Master Links as used in general rigging practice, thus providing a single lifting
point exactly under the centreline of the ramshorn or double hook.
Designed originally for the heavy duty work of Andromedas’ Recovery Strops and
made of 1000 MPa cast steel, these thimbles far exceed the Breaking Strength of
the Superflex cables fitted in them. Andromeda has carried out extensive break
tests on these cast thimbles and found them to be suitable for this application.
